Turning Stone Classic at Halfway Markby Rick Davis
Starting with a full 128-player field, the latest Turning Stone billiard event is at its halfway point and promises plenty of great matches to come as everyone seeks their share of the $25,000-added prize fund. Many top names and crowd favorites have already fallen, while others are still going strong after other recent top finishes.
On the winners’ side things are down to the top 16. Steve Moore, who has torn through every event he has entered recently, defeated former world champion Mika “Iceman” Immonen early and is still sitting pretty after three rounds. Moore faces Jeff Kennedy next, who has just come off a win against Florida Pro Tour champion Robb Saez 9-5. Other threats in that bracket include Santos Sambajon Jr., who has met no serious challenges, and Tony “The Sniper” Crosby, who just took down the Andy Gibbs Memorial event in Florida.
Shocking the crowd was the always-favored Thorsten “The Hitman” Hohmann being defeated in his opening round match 9-7 by Warren Kiamco of the Philippines. Afterward Kiamco scorched fellow countryman Gandy Valle 9-4 and is still threatening the winners’ side. Another surprise was one of the Northeast’s powerhouses, Mike Davis, getting the axe in the first round at the hands of Carmen Lombardo 9-3. Not everyone was struggling, though, as top Canadian player Erik Hjorliefson has remained undefeated and will face Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer in the next round. Another match to watch will be between Florida pro Richard Broumpton and Jose Parica, who face off in the next round as well.
With the action heating up, the one-loss side players will be dropping left and right as the rounds progress. Early one-loss side action has already brought about two surprising casualties as Hohmann was shown the door after a double-hill defeat from Marty Ciccia and Saez followed close behind after falling to Prameevorn Souvanthong 9-7.
Saturday's action will get started around noon and will continue through the evening as the event inches towards the finish sometime Sunday night.
