Uncanny Comeback for Pagulayan at IPT Billiard TournamentIn the most dramatic comeback of the event so far, Alex Pagulayan recovered from a 7-0 deficit against Dimitri Jungo to win their second-round match 8-7. Jungo, a 9-baller from Switzerland, broke and ran four racks to reach the hill. And then Pagulayan flipped the “on” switch and came alive. He had five break and runs in total to win the necessary eight racks in a row.“That’s probably the greatest comeback I ever made in my life,” exclaimed the exuberant Pagulayan. “I hooked myself and then kick-banked the eight in the side. I feel like my confidence went sky high, being down seven nothing then coming back eight-seven. I’m gonna feel sorry for my next three opponents.” Who will consist of Mick Hill, Thomas Engert, and Oliver Ortmann.IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship ForumsVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image Gallery
A rather crestfallen Jungo recalled, “The first match I play good, and the second I play good—I was up seven-oh! I had a chance but was a little unlucky, then I had another chance and don’t make it, but then he play very well. I’m not happy now, but I have more chances. I have never played a tournament where you have to be so fit, because every day you wake up and you play all day and then go to sleep. Every day the same. I feel very well and hope I can do well in the next one. Every player here is a great name—they are the best of the world.”Striding into the players’ green room, Pagulayan swung his arms and chanted, “I gotta chance, I gotta chance, I gotta chance …”Young European players Niels Feijen and Mika Immonen matched up on the TV table in the second round, with Immonen starting off strong with three break and run-outs. Interestingly, from then on, whichever player broke did not win. They traded games until the score reached 7-3. On the hill, Immonen cleared his balls but missed a thin cut on the 8 in the side, and Feijen ran out. But a scratch on the break sealed his fate, and Immonen carefully cleared the table to win 8-4.“I won eight-four—I’m relieved. I played good, and I was breaking much better, so I feel good going into the last three matches because I’ve been hitting the balls square.”As for the rest of his group, he added, “I know Ralf will be tough because he has a great average. I will just have to string some racks together against him.” Lone Taiwan player Hui-Kai Hsia defeated England’s Karl Boyes 8-3, and Efren Reyes dealt an 8-3 defeat to Thomas Engert. Oliver Ortmann defeated Mick Hill 8-3 with three break and runs.Rodney Morris remains the only undefeated player in his bracket for the day so far, having come out ahead in his hill-hill match against David Alcaide. Corey Deuel is 1-1, having just played against Francisco Bustamante, who proved that his loss to Morris in the first round of the day was clearly a fluke by winning 8-4.American players Charlie Williams and Danny Harriman are struggling and are both 0-2 for the day so far. Harriman lost a hill-hill bout to Dennis Orcollo, and Souquet won over Williams 8-5.“I was down three-nothing at the beginning, so I came back. It wasn’t a nice win, it was quite long and neither of us could find a rhythm, so I had a little more luck on my side because I had easier run-outs after the break,” Souquet explained.“I didn’t play bad, but not that well—somewhere in between. After many many days and hours of playing, everyone is getting a little tired. There are three more to go, but I just think from match to match. I will try to win them all the make sure ... and that’s it.”Quick LinksPlayer StatsPrize Money Breakdown Round 5 GROUP 79K. BoyesF. BustamanteH. HsiaC. DeuelR. MorrisD. AlcaideGROUP 80R. SouquetM.
