Upsets and Exciting Matches End Day ThreeDay Five Becomes the Moment of Truthby Rick DavisWednesday’s final evening round offered disaster for many of the seeded pros. Trevor Braymore defeated Fabio Petroni, while Charles Altamore squeaked past Santos Sambajon Jr. double-hill. One of the favorite seeds, Mike Davis, had a much easier time, besting Keith Bennett 11-4, the biggest win of the round next to Darren Appleton, who shut out Eric Moore.Discuss the U.S. Open 9-Ball ChampionshipU.S. Open 9-Ball Championships image galleryU.S. Open 9-Ball Championships Tournament BracketsWith the afternoon round of Day 5 weeding out the one-loss side, tonight’s matches will be do or die for the seeds already on the one-loss side, while those who remain on the winners’ side will begin to face each other.
The 11 a.m. round had two more forfeits—Shin Young Park and Mike Ricciardelli—to the amazement of the crowd. A passing spectator said, “I don’t understand that. If I paid five hundred, I would play my two sets.” Of those who decided to show up and play, two powerful victories treated the crowd. Wade Crane handed out the day’s first donut to Marc Claramount, while Robert Lewis had an amazing comeback, eliminating David Abraham after fighting back from an 8-5 deficit and running the last two racks to win double-hill. The ever-upbeat Tommy Kennedy, who played on the TV table, eliminated Jimmy Garza 11-7 and said, “He played incredible, and I made an eight-ball bank. From that point on, I won a majority of the games. I’m still a little shaky but I feel pretty good.”Everything was funny at the one o’clock round, at least for Ronnie “Everything's Funny When You’re Winning Big Money” Wiseman. After his 11-7 win over Steve Lee, he said “Everything is going beautiful. I love this tournament. I lost one, it was nine-nine, I broke the balls, and never shot again. The last couple matches I played real good—a lot of times it’s the breaks, unless you’re at the top of your game, then it's all you.”After 90 minutes of play, only two other matches were complete besides Wiseman's and as time move on the three o’clock players are starting to arrive. A few more seeded players will have to defend themselves, and tonight the first major matches of the event will unfold as billiard superstars like Johnny Archer, Corey Deuel, Gabe Owen, and others begin to face each other at the 31st U.S. Open.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
