VNEA Singles Events Wind Downby InsidePOOL StaffLas Vegas, Nevada- The Valley National 8-Ball Association singles events at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV, are winding down, and the men's and women's Master divisions are already completed.Scott Tollefson, winner of the recent U.S. Bar Table Championships in Reno, NV, last March, and the APA National Singles Championship in April continued his assault on amateur pool as he triumphed over Pete Trujillo ("Cheyenne Pete") in the men's 8-ball Master division in the two-set finals.  The first match of the true double-elimination finals was won by Trujillo 7-4.  Then Tollefson took a short break by stroking some balls around the table to get loose and compose himself for the second set.  Tollefson then rallied in the second set, showed more confidence, and defeated Trujillo 7-2 for the win. Tollefson is also playing in the finals of the men's Master 9-ball tournament later this evening.
In the women's 8-ball Master division, veteran VNEA player Joanne Ashton went undefeated through the winners' bracket to meet Tammie Jones in the finals.  Jones, who recently captured the BCA title last week, soundly defeated Ashton 7-3 in the first set of the finals. But Jones missed a few key balls in the second set, and Ashton, who was playing pretty strong throughout the entire event, captialized on the unforced errors and ultimately won 6-4.  Pam Bell, a former BCA champion who has been placing high in every event she enters lately, defeated Rachel Abbink, a rising star that is sure to capture her share of titles in the future, in the women's 9-ball Master division in their hill-hill match.  Both players performed well and it was an excellent match to watch for the spectators.  Eric Durbin, a well-seasoned all around player from Middletown, OH, has gone undefeated through the men's 8-ball open division.  Durbin won the hot seat from Scott Mcleon earlier this evening and will play in the finals at 10:30 AM PST on Monday.  The Durbin/Mcleon match was the quickest of the evening, with Durbin winning by a smooth 5-0 score.
