Bankshot Billiards in Columbus, OH, was host to the Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour the weekend of October 11-12, 2003. Bringing in a field of 45, this 8-ball event saw Jamie “Gummy Bear” McWhorter defeating John Maki in the finals. One of the newest rooms in Columbus, Bankshot Billiards’ owner Don Reeves was a gracious host and made sure that everyone over the weekend had a great time. The room itself is gorgeous, the tables are in excellent condition, and there also was some good action to be found.Dee Adkins, who has been absent from the scene for the past couple of months because of a broken arm, showed up to play. As it was his right arm that is broken (and he is right-handed), he played left-handed and used a short bridge when he needed it. In conjunction with his broken arm, he also has blood clots that will not allow his arm to be fixed for six months. At that point, his arm will be re-broken and then set in order for it to heal properly. He won one match and lost two, putting in a good effort, and reputedly had a great time.
The races were to 5 in the one-loss side and 7 in the winners’ side. Young gun Hunter Lombardo met up with McWhorter in the quarterfinals and got handed a 5-3 loss to go along with his fourth-place finish. In the hot seat match, Maki and Dale Eury of South Ohio faced each other, with Maki defeating his opponent 7-4. The semifinal was a tight match between Eury and McWhorter. Eury won the first three games, but McWorter replied with a 3-game streak of his own to tie. He made nothing on his next break, and Eury ran out to the 8 ball and missed. With these easy pickings, McWorter pocketed the 8 and broke and ran the final rack to win 5-3.In a tough final match that was a rematch of the hot seat, Maki was in perfect stroke but couldn’t seem to put anything together. McWorter was able to bulldoze over him and win the match 7-0. Maki seemed shaken by the pressure put on him, and all but handed game after game to his opponent. Soon it was all over, and McWorter won the second set 7-2.Next week’s Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour stop will be at Mr. Pockets Pool & Pub in Pittsburgh, PA, which is a $1,000-added tournament. The weekend of October 25-26, the Viking Tour will be at Gametime/Riptide in Greenville, SC, for a $5,000-added event.Results1st Jamie McWhorter $9002nd John Maki $6103rd Dale Eury $4104th Hunter Lombardo $2105th Fred Lane, Butch Poe $1007th Rich Chan, Bill Emiston $70Visit InsidePOOL for the latest from the sport of billiards and pool.
