Villareal in Final Four Billiard Eventby InsidePOOL StaffDefending champion Allison Fisher continues to dominate at the Women's Professional Billiards Association U.S. Open 9-Ball event, being held in Albuquerque, NM, at the Sandia Hotel & Casino. After winning her third–round match over Laura Smith 9-4, she went on to decimate Wendy Jans 9-2. Her next match, against Helena Thornfeldt of Sweden, was a tough one that went double-hill, with Fisher advancing to face Vivian “The Texas Tornado” Villareal next.Discuss the WPBA US Open
Villareal struggled back from the one-loss side after a first-round loss to Sueyen Rhee 9-6 to make it to the final 16, where the WPBA switches to a single-elimination, race-to-7 format. She notched wins over Jerri Engh, Gerda Hofstatter, Ga Young Kim, and a 9-8 nail-biter over Jeanette Lee to get there. In the bottom half of the bracket, third-ranked Monica Webb will battle Ireland’s Julie Kelly to play the winner of the Kim Shaw/Karen Corr match. Those ladies will compose the other half of the final four. Webb and Melissa Herndon had an interesting situation pop up in which they played each other twice in a row. On the winners’ side, Herndon came off a 9-5 win over Janet Atwell to bust Webb 9-4, only to have to face her in the next round because of the re-draw. This time, Webb won the rematch 9-6 to face Kelly. Shaw has had an exceptional event so far, scoring a 9-7 win over Jennifer Chen, a 9-4 victory over Lee, and another tough 9-7 set over Sarah Ellerby to get to Corr. “The Irish Invader” has had an equally difficult time of it, having to face down opponents such as 18-year-old prodigy Anna Kostanian, Kim White, and Chen.
