WPBA Enters Single-Eliminationby Mark MargarettenHighlighted in one of Saturday’s one-loss side matches was a tough hill-hill showdown between Helena Thornfeldt and Tiffany Nelson that saw them tied up at 2, 3, 5, and 8 games apiece before Nelson ran out to win a match that showcased her aggressive style with few safeties and a couple of 9 ball combos. A few yards away, Ellen Van Buren jumped out in front of Ewa Laurance, claiming a 5-1 before Laurance charged back to bring it to 7-6 Van Buren. Van Buren took the next two games, eliminating the Hall of Famer. In other earlier matches, Bonnie Coats defeated Melissa Little 9-6 and Gail Grecar eliminated Jane Fujinaga 9-6.See the tournament chartBy 3:30 p.m., the player to watch was clearly “The Florida Flash,” Van Buren. Not only did she earn her touring pro status by besting Megan Minerich 9-3, she made the final 16, en route to her highest finish yet.
After being sent to the one-loss side by defending champion Kelly Fisher, Jeanette Lee ousted Nelson 9-6. Xiaoting Pan eliminated Kim White 9-4, and Melissa Herndon defeated Laura Smith 9-2.Once the tournament has come down to eight players in each bracket, there is a draw. The undefeated players will draw from the one-loss side, and that will dictate the matches from that point, with the format changing to single elimination. This will give the remaining players a better chance to be in the televised matches. Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the world of billiards and pool.
