WPBA U.S. Open 9-Ball Beginsby InsidePOOL StaffSandia Casino in Albuquerque, NM, plays host to the Women’s Professional Billiards Association’s (WPBA) U.S. Open 9-Ball this week. Defending champion Allison “The Duchess of Doom” Fisher will attempt to retain her title while the 64-player field vies for not only the championship but the $16,000 first-place prize.
So far the matches have only progressed partway into the first round with few surprises. Sarah Rousey, recently moved to Atlanta, GA, bested Maureen Seto 9-6, while veteran Dawn Hopkins routed relative newcomer Pam Treadway 9-1. Hsin Huang, who burst onto the scene a few years ago, advanced 9-5 over Karen Armstrong, and another fresh face, Xiaoting Pan, won 9-3 over Denver’s Megan Minerich. Wendy Jans survived a double-hill match against Melissa Morris, and Helene Caukins dusted Angel Paglia 9-4.The event began October 18 and will conclude October 22. With the WPBA’s new format, the final eight players remaining on the one-loss side will draw into the final eight on the winners’ side, at which point the event becomes single-elimination.
