Wednesday's Billiards Rounds Moving Slowly Alongby Rick DavisComing in to the tournament room Wednesday morning, many of the spectators and players were a little groggy from last night's long round. The 11 p.m. round lasted until nearly 2 a.m. for many of the players as the matches grinded along. John "Mr. 400" Schmidt managed to deliver the only loss to a seeded player, winning a tight battle with Tommy Kennedy 11-9. The marathon for the evening was between John Moody and Chip Klein, whose match lasted three hours before Moody won double-hill. Additionally, the 12-year-old Landon Shuffett (pictured) played Jui-Lung Chen in the 11 a.m. round, with Shuffett triumphing 11-7.Discuss the U.S. Open 9-Ball ChampionshipU.S. Open 9-Ball Championships image galleryU.S. Open 9-Ball Championships Tournament Brackets
A handful of players had been eliminated last night, but all of today’s morning and afternoon matches will thin out the field. The morning group got underway sharply at 11 a.m., and another trio of forfeits opened the round. Soon after the third shutout of the event was seen as young gun John Morra crushed Michael Aro under the weight of the 11-0 score. The 1 p.m. round had three more forfeits, and after a little more than an hour of play, Tony Crosby eliminated the seeded past champion Mike LeBron 11-3 in the first match to finish in that round. The other seeded player in the round, Nick Varner, stayed alive by defeating Butch Croft by a wide 11-3 margin. Currently half the round is complete with the 3 p.m. players biting at their heels.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
