Wilkie Advances in Afternoon Rounds at the U.S. OpenBy InsidePOOLStaffThe Wednesday afternoon rounds offered very little surprises in the way of upsets at the 29th U.S. Open. The attention this afternoon was concentrated on the one-loss bracket, with the evening matches being reserved for the players on the no-loss side of the brackets.
The biggest upset of the afternoon matches came in the match between Shawn Wilkie and Danny Medina. It was a close match with both players performing some great shots. Medina left Wilkie an opening when the score was tied at 9-9 that lead to a 10-9 lead for Wilkie. Wilkie broke the balls only to scratch and give Medina ball in hand. Medina snookered himself when trying to get position on the three ball. The resulting safety battle gave Wilkie an open shot and clear table for the victory. Wilkie is an accomplished player and has been fairing well in several of the regional tour stops for some time. The matches resume tonight with several rounds of play from the winners’ side of the brackets. The ring game is scheduled for Thursday night and the players will be announced at a later time. The criteria for entering is that the player must be a World or U.S.Open champion. Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news from the sport of billiards and pool.
