Wilkie Wins the Warm UpTiger Tour / Cambridge, MDby Rick DavisShaun Wilkie beat a path through a tough field at the Tiger Tour’s stop the weekend of September 23-24. The event was held at Great Slates in Cambridge, MD, and is known to many as the U.S. Open warm-up because it is held a week before the prestigious U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships.By midday Sunday the winners’ side top four emerged with Brandon Shuff facing Josh Brothers and Shaun Wilkie going up against Mike Davis. Shuff defeated Brothers—just barely—after going double-hill, while Wilkie bested Davis 9-5. Fighting for the hot seat, Shuff got the best of Wilkie 9-6, sending him to the one-loss side.
While the winners’ side action continued, the west side remained just as active. Larry Kressel skipped past Mike Patton 7-4, while Lee Holt did one rack poorer, eliminating Shawn Putnam 7-5. Kressel continued to stay in stroke, eliminating Josh Brothers 7-5 and relegating him to fifth place. In the other corner, Davis played hard to stay in contention, defeating Holt 7-3 then Kressel 7-4, which led him to Wilkie for the second time in three rounds. Once again, Wilkie walked over Davis, this time 7-3, ending up back on the winners’ side to face Shuff. After denying Davis his revenge, Wilkie managed to exact some of his own by defeating Shuff 9-2 in the finals to claim the title. “I felt good, I just had my custom cue redone and I think the difference really helped me," stated Wilkie. "I was able to control the cue ball better. I think on average I broke and ran about thirty percent of the time. In the finals it was three-two me, and he missed an eight … then I just took the rest."
