Wilkie and Davis Crash the Carolinas OpenTwo Comebacks From the West Side Crown the Billiard Winnersby Rick DavisThe Carolinas Open drew in a big crowd for their billiards popular event, which featured 9-ball and one-pocket September 12-17. All of the action took place at Fast Eddie’s Sports Bar in Goldsboro, NC, where Shaun “Get Some” Wilkie claimed the top honors in 9-ball, while Mike Davis cleaned up the one-pocket action.Nine-ball action was fierce with 62 competitors for double-elimination races to 11. As the event neared completion only a handful remained who might capture the title. Battling for the hot seat were Bill Bailey and Brandon Ashcraft, and after the dust cleared Ashcraft had come out on top.
The one-loss side was no less exciting. Wilkie came back from an early loss and defeated Brian Jones and Delton Howard along the way, while Tony Watson cleared the other half of the board, eliminating Sparky Ferrell and Davis. Wilkie continued his streak, defeating Watson and then Bailey to reach the finals. In the finals Wilkie came through a grueling match against Ashcraft, defeating him 15-9. Once the 9-ball concluded, the one-pocket action took off, with many of the 9-ball players looking for a better finish. Ferrell did just that, winning the hot seat match against Brian Jones, while those on the one-loss side had their work cut out for them.Sam Monday cleared his piece of the one-loss board, defeating Tom Wirth and Wade Crane; however, Davis was determined to see the finals. He eliminated Bill Bailey and then Monday as well as Jones in order to travel back to the other side of the chart. Davis was in total control of the one-pocket finals, defeating Ferrell 5-1. After his victory he commented, “He missed key shots … even the out ball a few times. Sparky played strong, but I broke and ran seven, then the next game I broke and ran eight and out.
