Winners’ Bracket Down to Final Four at BCA Openby InsidePOOL StaffThe winners’ brackets in both divisions of the 2005 BCA Open 9-Ball Championships are down to the final four after Wednesday’s evening matches. The event, which began on Sunday, May 15, will conclude on Saturday and is being held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.Number-one ranked by the UPA, Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer triumphed in his winners’-bracket match against Hungary’s Sandor “Bambino” Tot. It was a close one the entire way through, but eventually Archer pulled ahead 10-8 in the race to 11. A miss on the 4 ball by Tot put Archer into the next level to face Chris Szuter of Canton, OH, on Thursday. Szuter has been having a great tournament and won his last match against Germany’s Andreas Roschkowsky 11-7.
“Marvelous Marlon” Manalo continues to roll over his opponents, with his latest victim Jose Garcia 11-3. He will meet former world champion Thorsten “The Hitman” Hohmann in Thursday’s matches. Earlier, Hohmann dealt Troy Frank his first loss 11-7.In the ladies’ division, Tiffany Nelson swept into the final four with a strong victory over Jeanette “The Black Widow” Lee. Down 3-1 in the beginning, Nelson turned the tables on Lee and took a 6-3 lead. After trading a few racks, the score was 8-6 in Nelson’s favor, and she played a tough out on the last rack to win. on Wednesday, Nelson will meet the WPBA’s number-one player, Allison Fisher, who won her match against Vivian Villareal 9-5.Ewa Laurance continues her winning ways with a hard-fought 9-7 over Jennifer Chen. She will meet three-time defending champion Karen “The Irish Invader” Corr in Thursday’s matches. Corr sent Monica Webb to the one-loss side earlier with a 9-2 win.In the elimination brackets, several top-notch players were sent home early. Earl Strickland was ousted by David Matlock 11-2, while Max Eberle suffered a hill-hill defeat at the hands of Steve Lipsky. Joey Korsiak continues to show how strong his game is recently by eliminating Corey Deuel 11-10 and then Frankie Hernandez 11-9.
