Winners' Side Matches Continue at Gabriels Las Vegas By InsidePOOL StaffThe afternoon session of the Gabriels Las Vegas 9-Ball Open have concluded, making way for the evening matches. The event, which is held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino, drew a total of 64 players and now is down to 8 in the winners' bracket and 8 in the one-loss side.Los Angeles player Tang Hoa met Frankie Hernandez in the one-loss side earlier this afternoon. Hernandez, who was responsible for Rodney Morris's loss in the first round, was up 7-3 and then 9-5 when Hoa looked as if he might be staging a comeback. He brought the score to 9-7 when he came up empty on the break, allowing Hernandez to run the rack and win the match 10-7.Fredrick, MD, player Mike Davis is still going strong in the one-loss bracket. He lost his first match to Danny Harriman, winner of the 9-ball banks division at the 2003 Derby City Classic, and went on to defeat Dick Lane in a close match by the score of 10-8.
World champion Thorsten Hohmann made it to the fourth round in the winners' bracket until he was stopped short by Johnny "The Scorpion" Archer. Archer, undaunted by Hohmann's prowess of late, took control of the match almost from the beginning, winning 10-5. "Mad Max" Eberle, who earlier in the event defeated tough players such as Ernesto Dominguez, Buddy Hall, and Mike Massey, went on to meet New York's Tony Robles in the fourth round. This match was long and hard fought, with both players trading racks throughout. Eventually Eberle triumphed, pulling ahead 9-8. When Robles scratched on his last break, Eberle capitalized, running out cautiously for the 10-8 win. Eberle faces off with Archer at 11 p.m. in the winners' bracket.Niels Feijen of the Netherlands had a tough time with Charlie Williams, who ending up sending Feijen to the one-loss bracket 10-4. Williams will face Efren Reyes in the 11 p.m. winners' bracket matches, which is a rematch of the finals of the Big Apple event that took place last week at Master Billiards in Queens, NY.
