Wiseman Takes the Helm in Valley Forge Voyage
Three remain to oppose unbeaten Detroit stalwart
by Paul Berg, Inside POOL Staff
With immaculate position play, wily tactic, and just a bit of St. Patrick’s Day luck, Ronnie Wiseman has marched through the UPA’s specially selected field of 64 in the Gabriels Open 9-Ball Professional Players Championship. While the snow storms that have hit King of Prussia, PA, during Allen Hopkins’ fabulous Super Billiards Expo have made it hard for some fans to get in this weekend, those whom are here are happy to stay out of the cold. The arena has been packed and the level of play has risen to the occasion.
Starting his day with a nearly flawless 10-6 defeat of Johnny Archer, Wiseman cooled off a red-hot Ryan McCreesh by the same score. In the winners’-bracket final, Rodney Morris stayed even with Wiseman throughout a brisk set, but Detroit resident and Windsor native Wiseman broke in a 9 ball to take a 9-6 lead that led a to a 10-8 victory.
Neither Archer nor McCreesh could make it back through the B-side for a shot at revenge, as Archer ground through Evgeny Stalev and Cliff Joyner only to run into a determined Fabio Petroni. With a painful scratch on an 8-9 combination and a chance to match Petroni on the hill gone, Archer yielded 10-8. Maryland’s “Genie Man” McCreesh fell straight into Deuel, who broke to a 2-9 combo in the last rack of a comeback 10-9 victory. It sealed a fifth-place tie between Archer and McCreesh, while Petroni and Deuel will play for a crack at Morris tomorrow. Wiseman can stay out a little extra late and celebrate: The challenge tables downstairs should suit him just fine, as the Expo rolls through a rollicking St. Pat’s night into its conclusion tomorrow.
