World Summit of Pool Going StrongBy InsidePOOL StaffThings are going well at the World Summit of Pool, held in New York City’s Grand Central Station September 30-October 3. The second day has seen some interesting match-ups, with more to come tonight.Finland’s Mika Immonen, who recently took fifth place at the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships, returned from his home land after celebrating his father’s birthday to meet up with Blane Cel in today’s morning round. Cel, ostentatiously clad in scuba goggles, headphones, and a bright orange whistle, won the lag, broke, and ran out. Immonen returned the favor, and then Cel broke and ran out again in the alternate-break format. However, Immonen was able to pull away after this, and ultimately he won the match 11-3. After his match he said, “It’s an excellent, exceptional venue,” referring to the beautiful Vanderbilt Hall in which the matches are being played. “You don’t get this type of exposure.”
Grady Mathews won his match over Martin Rimlinger 11-9, and local player Evan Broxmeyer defeated Jack McGinnis 11-7. Mike Davis won over Edgar Acaba 11-3, and Danny Basavich sent Charlie Williams to the one-loss side with an 11-9 victory. Charlie Bryant sent Tim Hall to the one-loss side 11-2, and Dennis “The Bear” Coulter won his match against Ricky Bingham 11-2. Rhode Island’s Joey Korsiak, who just placed third at the Eighth Annual New England 9-Ball tournament, defeated Shawn Keaton 11-2, and Canadian Luc Salvas won over Mike Pantojo 11-4. “Rocket” Rodney Morris is going strong with his 11-7 victory over Rob Hart, while Michigan’s Brandon Ashcraft staged an upset over Brooklyn’s Tony Robles 11-5Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news from the World Summit of Pool.
