Wych Says Philippines Billiards Team Looks UnbeatableLegendary pool and billiards commentator Jim Wych has backed the Philippines billiard team to become the winners of the first ever PartyPoker.com World Cup of Pool.Wych, 52, has been the voice of pool for 17 years and has watched every match of the World Cup so far.He believes the Filipino pairing of Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante (pictured), who thrashed Malta 9-0 in their opening match, have been the most impressive side to date.Who do you think will win? Discuss World Cup of Pool here.“The seedings have been pretty accurate and it’s pretty tough to go against the number one seeds as the Philippines look unbeatable,” said Wych.
“The intimidation factor is going to play a part against everyone except the top high seeds and I would be very surprised if it isn’t seeds one (Philippines), two (Holland), three (USA) and four (Germany) in the semi-finals. “From a flowing standpoint I liked the Philippines but from a methodical, systematic way of playing I liked Germany and they looked completely in control (against Wales) but then again, so did the Philippines.“Those teams that have watched the play will realise how important it is to work together and communicate. The key to this format is trying to alleviate the pressure from your partner and for him to do the same to you."Canadian Wych believed USA would have benefited a great deal from a tough first round match against Singapore and was looking forward to America's second round encounter with England B.“I thought Singapore would be the best bet to get beaten in round one but they were a lot better than I expected,” said Wych. " It will definitely put the USA in good stead as they survived a big-time scare and they had to show character to do so."America's match against Steve Davis and Daryl Peach is the showcase match of round two. Rodney Morris and Earl Strickland are out-going, with a very loose, fast-flowing style and they will be against the body blows that Davis and Peach will deliver.“I look for that to be a really good match and Steve Davis loves a challenge and this poses a challenge for him.”Wych has enjoyed the wide-range of matches ranging from the thrilling, high drama encounters to the more sublime ones but has also liked seeing talented new players making their mark on the big stage.“The best match I’ve seen so far, given the circumstances, is USA v Singapore," said Wych. “But from a dramatic point you cannot beat a hill-hill game and the Sweden upset showed the energy and some terrific shot-making from Hong Kong.“I had never seen a match like the Vietnam v Croatia one. Even though Vietnam won they just didn’t look like they were in-sync or play as a team but they still got through. The competition is full of high drama and is pressure-packed and unpredictable.”
