Yang Wins First San Miguel 9-Ball Tour Stop SINGAPORE, expnstar.com The final day of competition at the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour's inaugural leg at Singapore's Pool Haven proved to be an exciting showdown among world-class 9-ball players from Chinese Taipei and the Philippines with Chinese Taipei's Yang Ching-Shun (world no. 7)beating Warren Kiamco from the Philippines (world no. 8) 11-7 in the title decider. Yang held sway right from the start but after winning nine racks in the race to 11 could only watch as Kiamco deftly fought his way back, reducing the deficit from 9-3 to 9-7 racks. That was as far as Kiamco could go as Yang regained his poise to clinch the win with a 9-ball pocket break in the 18th rack. Said Yang: "Attitude is very important. If I want to win and I have the focus and the attitude, I perform well. I think I had that tonight." The semi-finals saw compatriots pitted against each other with Kiamco meeting Francisco "Django" Bustamante and Yang meeting Hsia Hui-Kai.
Kiamco upset the apple-cart by beating world no. 3 Bustamante 11-9. This was the sixth career meeting between Bustamante and Kiamco and with today's win, Kiamco draws level with his more illustrious opponent, both sharing three wins apiece. The exhilarating match saw Kiamco building an early lead, going ahead 6-3. But with the crowd urging him, Django Bustamante soon caught up, winning six straight racks to lead 9-6. Unfazed, Kiamco fought back to level the scores at 9 racks apiece before going on to win. In an equally thrilling match between two of the best pool players from Chinese Taipei, 2002 Asian Games 9-Ball Gold Medallist Yang Ching-Shun topped 2002 Asian Games 8-Ball Gold Medallist Hsia Hui-Kai 11 racks to 8. It was always close with both players pocketing at breakneck speed. Three of the racks were decided with the 9-ball going in off the break -- twice to Yang and once for Hsia. The first 15 racks saw the lead changing hands regularly but with the score at 9-8 in favor of Yang, he found the momentum to close off the match. For more information visit espnstar.com
